First, what "SEO for ChatGPT" means
People use the phrase for two different things. One is getting your business named and linked in ChatGPT's answers. The other is using ChatGPT to write content that ranks on Google. This article is about the first. The two are easy to mix up: when we asked ChatGPT "How do I do SEO for ChatGPT?" on 7 October 2026, as one of 30 buyer questions we put to three AI tools, it answered about ranking ChatGPT-written content in Google. It is one test on one day, and answers vary, so spell out what you mean when you write about this.
How ChatGPT finds information
ChatGPT can search the web when a question needs current information, and its answers may include links to the sources it used. OpenAI's help page also says that ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, and that it rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries to send to them. It adds that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
What this means for you: ChatGPT's answer depends on what its search can retrieve, from your site and from other pages about you. If your own page is hard to find, thin or out of date, or if other pages say something different, that is what ChatGPT has to work with.
What helps
- Let the right crawler in. OpenAI lists three crawlers separately. OAI-SearchBot is the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features, and OpenAI says a site that opts out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link. GPTBot relates to training. ChatGPT-User handles actions a person asks for in ChatGPT. You can allow OAI-SearchBot without allowing GPTBot, and OpenAI says it can take around 24 hours for a robots.txt change to take effect.
- Answer the question first. Put the plain answer in the first two sentences of the page, then explain.
- Say the same thing everywhere. Keep your name, description, address and services identical on your site, your profiles, directories and reviews. When a search turns up different versions, ChatGPT has no way to tell which is right.
- Make facts easy to find. Put prices, locations, dates and claims on clear, dated pages, and link to your sources.
- Earn mentions on other sites. Profiles, reviews, roundups and press give a search more than one place to find you. Appearing is the publishers' decision, so plan for effort, not a guarantee.
- Keep pages current. An old price or a closed branch on an indexed page can end up in an answer.
You do not need a special file or special markup for this. For Google's own AI features, Google says no extra requirements or special schema are needed, and the same advice (clear, current pages that can be crawled) applies here.
What does not help
- Promises of guaranteed placement. No one controls what ChatGPT names, so no one can promise an organic mention. Paid advertising, where a platform offers it, is a separate matter that this article does not cover.
- Blocking the search crawler and expecting to appear. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, ChatGPT search will not show the site.
- Invented statistics and fake reviews. They are easy to check and they damage trust.
How to check where you stand
Write down the 20 to 30 questions your customers ask. Ask each in ChatGPT, on a schedule, and save the answer with its date and the sources it cites. Note three things: whether your business is named, whether your own site is cited, and whether what it says is correct. If it is wrong, find the page it came from. That page, and not ChatGPT, is what you fix. Then ask the same question again. What an AI visibility audit includes describes the full method.
